Orange County, California

The Orange Country Coalition of Reason just put out the billboard above as part of a nationwide campaign to reach out to atheists, agnostics, humanists, and nonbelievers to let them know that they are not alone, that there is community for them.

Maggie Rice, the mayor of Westminster, of course, isn’t merely unhappy.

“That billboard is going to turn my stomach every time I drive by,” she said. “But there is not much I can do about it. I guess it’s fine to make a statement, but if I could help it, I would not allow it.”

Rice said she will be seeking the advice of the city’s legal counsel to find out what their options are.

Let me get this straight. She knows there’s a right to free speech, and she knows that there are legal protections that prevent her from doing anything. But if the laws weren’t on the books and she got her way, she would intervene and shut us up.

It is people like her that make us realize how lucky we are to live in a country with a secular Constitution and a First Amendment. We can never trust people who both think they have knowledge of the supernatural and who have worldly power.

Of course, there are people who are tolerant enough to support the billboards, even Christians. Take this pastor for example.

John Furman, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, which is just blocks from where the billboard will be situated, called it a “foolish” move because The Bible says, “The fool says in his heart there is no God.”

It is quite odd that Mr. Furman didn’t continue the verse to say that atheists “are corrupt, and their ways are vile; there is no one who does good” (Psalm 53:1).

Too bad these delusional people can’t see beyond their own self-righteous fairy tales. Too bad they have no evidence at all to back up their ridiculous claims, which is no surprise. Inspirational video of the day:
